A 75-year-old Kingman man was killed Friday afternoon following a tragic utility terrain vehicle (UTV) accident in the Hualapai Mountains, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported. The fatal incident occurred on October 23, when the man's UTV reportedly went off a trail and plummeted approximately 200 feet down a steep mountainside. Authorities received initial reports of the crash at approximately 2 p.m., prompting an immediate and extensive emergency response.
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies were among the first to respond to the remote and challenging terrain. They were swiftly joined by specialized teams from MCSO Search and Rescue, along with Mohave Park Rangers, to form a comprehensive response effort at the scene. Responders encountered a group of UTVs that had been navigating a particularly narrow and rocky trail, which serves as a passage from Soap Canyon toward Hualapai Mountain County Park. It was within this rugged stretch that one of the vehicles unexpectedly left the designated trail, subsequently rolling down a ravine.
The environment at the crash site presented significant challenges for emergency personnel. The terrain was described by the Sheriff's Office as steep and rugged, making direct access to the downed UTV exceptionally difficult and hazardous. This necessitated the deployment of highly specialized equipment and technical expertise to ensure the safety of responders while reaching the victim. To overcome these geographical obstacles, MCSO Search and Rescue technical rope technicians were called upon to establish a sophisticated technical rope system. This system was crucial for enabling personnel to safely descend the sheer drop-off to the location where the UTV had come to rest.
Once the intricate rope system was securely in place, the specialized technicians were able to navigate the perilous descent. Their efforts led them to the crashed UTV and the driver, who was later identified as John Emory Shuttz. Upon reaching Mr. Shuttz, responders confirmed the grim reality of the situation; he was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.
Following this pronouncement, the focus shifted to the recovery operation. Search and Rescue personnel meticulously undertook the physically demanding and sensitive task of extracting Mr. Shuttz’s body from the depths of the ravine. Once recovered and brought to safety, the body was carefully transported to a designated command post that had been established closer to the accident site. From this temporary base, the remains of the Kingman man were officially transferred into the custody of the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office, where further procedures would be conducted.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has not released specific details concerning the precise factors or sequence of events that led to the UTV departing from the trail. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers and unpredictable nature of operating off-road vehicles, particularly within the demanding and unforgiving landscapes characteristic of the Hualapai Mountains. Emergency services are regularly called upon to respond to such incidents in the region, highlighting the critical role of specialized rescue operations in remote areas.
