Lake Havasu City is preparing to break ground on the Freedom Bridge, a significant infrastructure project set to create a second connection between the Island and the mainland. Residents, community partners, and members of the public are invited to attend the official Groundbreaking Ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. The event will take place at the future site of the Freedom Bridge on the Island side, marking the official commencement of construction.

This long-awaited project is designed to provide an additional route for emergency access and evacuation, addressing a need that has been discussed for decades within the community. Mayor Cal Sheehy described it as "an exciting and significant moment for Lake Havasu City," emphasizing that reaching the groundbreaking stage is a cause for celebration. Mayor Sheehy further noted that the Freedom Bridge represents an investment in the safety, connectivity, and future of the community.

The Lake Havasu City Council formally named the new bridge the Freedom Bridge, and its connecting roadway Freedom Avenue, during a meeting on September 22. This decision followed years of meticulous planning and public engagement to advance the project.

Funding for the second bridge project, which also serves as an emergency evacuation route, includes $35.5 million in state-appropriated funds. This allocation covers the study, design, and construction phases. The initiative has progressed through extensive feasibility analysis, design work, and coordination with various local, state, and federal partners to reach this milestone.

City Manager Jess Knudson highlighted the collaborative effort required to reach this point, stating that it "has taken years of planning, collaboration, and coordination." Knudson reiterated that the Freedom Bridge will establish an important second connection to the Island and an additional emergency access and evacuation route for residents. The City Manager expressed enthusiasm for the start of construction and gratitude to all who contributed to the project's advancement.

Lake Havasu City has partnered with Ames Construction for this substantial infrastructure undertaking. Beyond the bridge itself, the project encompasses associated roadway, intersection, utility, and drainage improvements, ensuring comprehensive enhancements to the area's infrastructure. Community members are encouraged to join City officials, project partners, and staff to celebrate the start of this new chapter for Lake Havasu City.
