On Thursday, September 10, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m., emergency services in Lake Havasu City responded to reports of a significant fire in an apartment complex located in the 2200 block of Sandwood Drive. Multiple callers alerted authorities to the developing situation, prompting a rapid deployment of fire crews to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began operations to suppress the blaze. Their efforts proved effective, with crews gaining control of the active fire in approximately one hour. This swift initial response prevented further uncontrolled spread of the flames. Despite gaining control, fire personnel remained on scene for an extensive period, dedicating an additional five hours to critical post-fire operations. These efforts included thorough overhaul procedures, which involve systematically searching for and extinguishing hidden hot spots to prevent reignition. Salvage operations were also conducted to mitigate further damage to the structure and contents. Crews assisted occupants with retrieving essential belongings from the affected building, a crucial step in aiding those displaced by the incident.
Fortunately, all human occupants of the apartment complex were able to safely evacuate the building before or during the fire. However, the incident was not without tragic consequences, as several pets did not survive the fire. Additionally, one firefighter sustained a minor injury while engaged in operations, highlighting the inherent risks associated with emergency response.
The large-scale incident necessitated a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies and personnel. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department's Community Emergency Response Team (LHCFD CERT) mobilized several members to provide crucial support, assisting with firefighter rehabilitation duties on scene. This support is vital for ensuring the well-being and continued operational readiness of the first responders during prolonged engagements.
Further demonstrating inter-agency cooperation, the Desert Hills Fire Department deployed a crew to Lake Havasu City. Their presence provided additional coverage for other 911 calls that might arise throughout the city while local Lake Havasu City Fire Department resources were fully committed to the Sandwood Drive incident. To further bolster emergency coverage across the city, two additional fire engine crews, composed of recalled off-duty personnel, were activated. This strategic deployment ensured that Lake Havasu City maintained adequate resources to respond to any other emergency calls during the ongoing apartment complex fire.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators were present on the scene throughout the night and into the morning hours, working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze. Further information regarding the investigation's findings is expected as the process continues.
