The Detroit Lions are reportedly considering a trade for Arizona Cardinals running back Tyler Allgeier as they approach the NFL trade deadline, as heavy.com reported. While most trade discussions center on the Lions adding defensive players, an alternative option is to solidify the backup running back position.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report identified Detroit as an ideal landing spot for Allgeier, suggesting the acquisition would not be costly for the Lions. For the Cardinals, a trade would provide them with an asset in return and create cap space. Knox noted that Arizona could expect to receive a mid-Day 3 pick for Allgeier, while saving $1.6 million in 2026 cap space and an additional $5.2 million in 2027 cap room.

The Lions' interest stems from the current workload of their primary running back, Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs has accumulated 134 rushing attempts through six games this season, averaging 22.3 attempts per game. This pace projects him to reach 379 rushing attempts for the year, an extreme increase compared to his career average of 14.7 rushing attempts per game over 250 total career attempts.

Detroit had anticipated having Isiah Pacheco serve as the backup, but Pacheco sustained an injury in training camp and experienced a setback in his recovery. It would be a surprise if Pacheco is able to play for the Lions this season. The current backup, Sione Vaki, has 16 rushing attempts this year. Vaki entered the season with only seven rushing attempts over two prior seasons, indicating his current workload is already significant. Adding a proven running back is seen as the Lions' best strategy to alleviate some of the pressure on Gibbs and ensure he remains fresh for the latter part of the season.

For the Cardinals, the potential trade aligns with their objectives. Allgeier, a former fifth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons, previously served as a backup to Bijan Robinson, making him familiar with such a role. However, circumstances have shifted for the Cardinals. They aim to provide rookie Jeremiah Love with more carries as the season progresses. Additionally, the presence of Bam Knight is already reducing Allgeier's snap count. Allgeier has recorded 61 rushes for 176 yards so far this season.

The Cardinals are currently holding a 2-5 record and are situated in one of the NFL's more competitive divisions. The team may also consider turning to rookie third-round pick Carson Beck as their starting quarterback in the near future. These factors suggest that if a suitable offer for Allgeier were to materialize, the Cardinals would be inclined to accept it, providing a crucial impact for Detroit’s needs.

The trade deadline will determine if the Lions are able to secure Tyler Allgeier for their roster, potentially balancing their backfield and supporting their primary runner through an demanding season.
