The Lake Havasu Knights varsity football team earned a hard-fought 27-21 victory against the visiting Estrella Foothills Wolves on Friday night, marking their second consecutive home game won in the final minute. The decisive play came with less than 45 seconds remaining in the game when senior Luke Johnson scored a touchdown from the 1-yard line, putting Havasu ahead.

Johnson reflected on the moment after the game, noting that the trust from his team to execute on fourth down, coupled with the encouragement from the sideline and huddle, meant a great deal. He characterized the win as "a whole team effort tonight."

Estrella Foothills had tied the score at 21 with 4:14 left in the game, setting the stage for Havasu's final offensive push. Following the ensuing kickoff, the Havasu offense initially struggled. Faced with a critical fourth down in their own territory, junior punter Dominic Bailey, who was set to punt, saw an opening on the right side. Bailey scrambled for a crucial first down, successfully keeping the Havasu drive alive. From there, the offense advanced down to the Estrella 1-yard line, culminating in Johnson's dramatic touchdown.

Head coach Tanner Kelly discussed the strategic decision for the final play, stating that several options, including trick plays and roll-out maneuvers, were considered. Ultimately, the team decided to "trust our guys." During a timeout, the instruction was given that all 10 players needed to push hard to get Johnson into the end zone, which they achieved, resulting in the significant score.

Havasu had established a 14-0 lead by halftime. The first touchdown came from junior Khi Nunno, who returned an 80-yard interception for a score after recently returning from an injury. Later in the second quarter, senior Koen Taylor intercepted an Estrella Foothills pass, leading to another Havasu touchdown just before halftime. Senior quarterback Keilor Pizarro connected with Johnson from three yards out to extend the lead to 14-0.

Estrella Foothills began to close the gap in the third quarter, scoring with nine minutes left to cut Havasu's lead to 14-7. However, Taylor immediately responded on the ensuing kickoff, racing 95 yards for a touchdown that put Havasu up 21-7. Estrella Foothills then mounted a comeback, scoring another touchdown late in the third quarter and a tying touchdown with 4:14 left in the game, setting up the dramatic conclusion.

With this victory, Havasu improves its season record to 5-4 and maintains its playoff aspirations. The team's final regular season game is scheduled for October 30 at Somerton High School against the 2-7 Toros. Coach Kelly, despite Somerton's record, stated that they are "a much improved program." He emphasized the importance of the Knights getting healthy and preparing diligently throughout the week for the upcoming game. Ultimately, Kelly noted, Max Preps will determine the playoff picture after the regular season concludes. He expressed hope that the win against a top team would help "catapult us a little bit," but stressed the immediate need to focus on Somerton.

Playoff seeding for the 4A division will be finalized on November 1. The top eight teams will receive a first-round bye, while teams ranked 17th through 24th will play against those ranked ninth through 16th. Havasu entered Friday night's game ranked 28th, four spots outside a playoff position.
