Lake Havasu City, AZ – The Lake Havasu Knights football team suffered a narrow 33-26 defeat to Buckeye on Thursday night, losing a game they largely controlled for the first three quarters. Despite holding a significant lead for much of the contest, the Knights succumbed to a late fourth-quarter rally and a failed two-point conversion attempt that ultimately decided the outcome.
The Knights had Buckeye's potent offense largely contained for the majority of the game, carrying a 20-13 advantage into the final quarter. However, the momentum shifted quickly in the fourth. Just 11 seconds into the quarter, Buckeye scored on a 22-yard pass play, knotting the score at 20 and igniting a new phase of the game.
Havasu's subsequent offensive possession failed to generate significant progress, giving the ball back to Buckeye. The visitors capitalized on this opportunity, driving down the field to score again, taking a 27-20 lead with 6:01 remaining in the game.
Undeterred, the Knights mounted a comeback. Senior quarterback Keilor Pizarro, who had reportedly battled cramping issues throughout the second half, connected with Junior Maddox Cosentino for a crucial 65-yard catch and run into the end zone. This spectacular play brought Havasu within a single point of Buckeye, making the score 27-26. Following the touchdown, Coach Tanner Kelly made the strategic decision to attempt a two-point conversion that would have given Havasu the lead. However, the Havasu runner was stopped just short of the goal line, and the attempt failed, leaving the Knights trailing by one point.
Buckeye quickly countered, receiving the ensuing kickoff and scoring once more. This extended their lead to 33-26 with 4:11 left on the clock. The Knights were then faced with a daunting task: score a touchdown and convert another two-point extra point to force a tie. Havasu’s final drive, however, concluded with 2:43 remaining in the game, as they were unable to convert on a fourth down and five yards to go, effectively ending their hopes of a comeback.
Following the tough loss, Coach Kelly reflected on the game's outcome. "In football, it’s a four quarter game," he stated, emphasizing the need for consistent performance. He pointed to specific areas for improvement, noting that against strong teams like Buckeye, players must ensure they are "tackling, wrapping guys up and you’re getting to your spots." Kelly identified instances where Havasu players missed tackles, failed to maintain blocks, and did not keep their defensive contain. He specifically referenced a 66-yard touchdown run by Buckeye in the first quarter, where the runner initially appeared stopped in the backfield but managed to slip a tackle and sprint to the end zone.
The fourth quarter proved particularly challenging for the Havasu defense. While they fought valiantly, the unit was impacted by injuries and players becoming winded, contributing to Buckeye's ability to break off several big runs. Despite the late-game difficulties, Coach Kelly acknowledged the team’s strong performance for much of the game. "But overall," Kelly continued, acknowledging the team played "three quarters strong." He emphasized the need to "shore up a few things" and assess player health to fill spots for future games.
Kelly expressed concern over the number of players sidelined by injuries during the game, adding to the five starters who were already out before Thursday night. With another game approaching, the team's depth will be tested. He remains optimistic about the team's readiness for the next challenge, stating, "We’ll have our guys ready for next week." He also highlighted the leadership of senior co-captains Luke Johnson (No. 12) and Vincent Fiantaca (No. 9) in preparing the team.
With this defeat, the Lake Havasu Knights' season record now stands at 3-3. They are set to face Deer Valley (2-3) in their next contest. The upcoming game against Deer Valley has been rescheduled to Thursday night, October 8, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. at Lee Barnes Stadium.
In other news from the school, the Lake Havasu High School spirit line hosted a successful Little Knights cheer clinic this week. The clinic culminated with the young participants joining the spirit line on the field during the game for cheers and dance, adding to the evening's atmosphere.
