LAKE HAVASU CITY — Local emergency services responded to a hard landing involving a military aircraft late Sunday night after a helicopter crashed in a public parking area near the water, as Lake Havasu City, AZ - News Flash reported.
Emergency dispatchers received calls reporting an aircraft emergency at approximately 10:14 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026. The reported location centered in the area of London Bridge Road and the Windsor launch ramp, bringing immediate public safety responses to the vicinity.
The initial unit to arrive at the scene was a local fire company. Upon making scene contact, firefighters observed that a military helicopter had completed a crash landing inside the parking lot area designated for the Windsor launch ramp. The first arriving unit immediately verified the nature of the incident and relayed critical scene conditions to incoming response personnel.
Following the initial confirmation, dispatch dispatched a specialized task force to manage the potential fire hazards and perform any necessary extraction efforts. The total deployment included three Engine Companies, one Airport Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Truck, and a Battalion Chief. Together, these units initiated immediate fire suppression positioning and rescue operations around the downed aircraft.
Despite the impact of the crash landing, both individuals inside the military aircraft managed to escape the wreckage without assistance from rescue tools. The two pilots were able to self-extricate themselves directly from the helicopter and walk away under their own power following the impact. Emergency medical personnel subsequently evaluated both pilots at the scene before transporting them to Havasu Regional Medical Center for further medical evaluation.
Firefighters addressing the downed aircraft identified an active hazard involving leaking fuel from the helicopter. To mitigate the risk of ignition or environmental hazard, responding fire crews applied firefighting foam over the affected zone. This measure effectively created a safe working area, allowing personnel to secure the military helicopter and manage the surrounding surface condition. Emergency commanders reported that no firefighters sustained injuries during the course of the call or subsequent cleanup operations.
After securing the immediate area and confirming the stability of the scene, emergency personnel maintained an extended presence at the location. Fire crews remained on the scene for an additional four and a half hours following the initial call to monitor conditions and prevent any further emergencies from developing in the parking lot area.
While local emergency crews handled initial containment, fire suppression, and medical support, official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident has shifted to federal defense authorities. The specific cause of the crash landing remains under investigation by military personnel.
Members of the public seeking further information regarding the incident or the local fire response may reach out directly to municipal fire authorities. Officials have directed inquiries to the on-duty Battalion Chief at (928) 486-3507 or the Fire Administration office at (928) 855-1141.
